An Antigua Guatemala wedding gives you cobblestone streets, pastel colonial facades, candlelit convent ruins and three volcanoes on the skyline: Agua, Acatenango and Fuego, which still smokes on clear days. Antigua was the capital of Central America until the earthquakes of 1773 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. I'm Anya from Bluuue Love, a destination wedding photographer, and this guide covers venues, timing, guest logistics and the photo spots that make Antigua weddings special.
Why Antigua is Guatemala's top wedding destination
Antigua is the easiest place in Guatemala to host a full destination wedding. It is about 1 to 1.5 hours from La Aurora International Airport (GUA), it has hotels at every budget within walking distance, and its restaurants and vendors are used to international couples.
Venues with history. Several hotels are built around 16th to 18th-century convents and churches, so your ceremony can take place among real ruins.
A walkable city. Guests can walk from their hotel to the ceremony, and you can take portraits on the way to the reception.
An easy add-on. Many couples marry in Antigua and then take guests to the lake for a post-wedding trip (see my Lake Atitlan wedding guide).
Antigua Guatemala wedding venues
Most Antigua venues fall into three styles. Pick the style that matches your day, then compare venues within it.
Convent and ruin hotels. Stone arches, open-air courtyards and candles at night. Hotel Museo Casa Santo Domingo and El Convento Boutique Hotel are the classic choices. They are the most popular, so book early for dry-season Saturdays.
Garden and hacienda venues. Lawns, fountains and volcano views, as at San José El Viejo or Porta Hotel Antigua. They work well for 80 or more guests and dancing outdoors.
Hillside and coffee estates. Panoramic views over the valley and sunsets over the volcanoes, at places like Santo Domingo del Cerro or coffee fincas such as Finca Filadelfia. Arrange transport for guests, since they sit outside the center.
Before you sign, check the guest capacity, the rain plan, the music curfew (many central venues have one), corkage and outside-vendor rules, and whether candles and open flames are allowed among the ruins.
Best time of year for an Antigua wedding
November to April is the dry season, with sunny days around 22 to 26°C (72 to 79°F) and cool evenings. It is the most popular period, so venues book up 9 to 12 months ahead.
May to October brings afternoon showers but greener hills and better availability. A covered courtyard or a tent makes rainy-season weddings work well.
Holy Week (Semana Santa, March or April) is spectacular, with flower carpets and processions through the streets. It is also Antigua's busiest week, with high hotel prices and closed streets. Treat it as a reason to come, or as a week to avoid.
Photo spots in Antigua for your wedding portraits
These are the locations I plan into Antigua wedding timelines.
1.Santa Catalina Arch (Calle del Arco): the city's icon, with Volcán de Agua behind it. Go early morning to avoid crowds.
2. La Merced church: a bright yellow baroque facade that glows in late-afternoon light.
3. Cerro de la Cruz: a viewpoint above the city with Agua in the background. Best for a sunset or sunrise session.
4. Cobblestone side streets: colorful doors and walls for relaxed, candid portraits between ceremony and reception.
5. Convent ruins inside your venue: arches and old stone for dramatic portraits after dark.
For walking portraits, bring comfortable shoes or block heels. The cobblestones are uneven, and stilettos do not survive them.
Guest logistics for an Antigua wedding
Guests fly into GUA in Guatemala City. Book a group shuttle for arrivals, because traffic between the airport and Antigua can double the travel time at rush hour. Inside Antigua most guests walk; tuk-tuks and taxis cover the rest.
Antigua sits at about 1,500 meters (4,900 ft). Tell guests to drink water and take it easy on the first day.
Antigua Guatemala wedding cost
Antigua offers more choice at every budget than the lake, because there are more hotels and vendors. Venue hire, catering per guest and transport for venues outside the center are the biggest costs. My photography is quoted individually. After our first conversation I put together a collection that fits your day, from a few hours in the city to full coverage with a sunrise session.
Antigua Guatemala wedding FAQ
Can we get married in a church in Antigua? Catholic church weddings are possible but need parish paperwork, so start early. Many couples choose a symbolic ceremony in a ruin courtyard instead.
How many days should guests plan? Three to four nights in Antigua is ideal, plus two nights at Lake Atitlan if you add a post-wedding trip.
Can we combine Antigua and Lake Atitlan in one wedding? Yes. A common plan is a welcome dinner and ceremony in Antigua, then a smaller group trip or an after-session at the lake. The legal side is covered in my Guatemala destination wedding guide.
