A Guatemala wedding combines volcano views, colonial architecture and living Maya culture, all within a few hours' drive of one international airport. Most couples choose between two places: Antigua Guatemala for a classic, walkable destination wedding, or Lake Atitlan for a nature-first wedding or elopement. I'm Anya from Bluuue Love, a destination wedding photographer working across Guatemala, and this guide walks you through choosing a location, the legal side, the best season and a realistic planning timeline.
Why get married in Guatemala?
Two very different settings, close together. Antigua and Lake Atitlan are about 2.5 to 3 hours apart, so guests can experience both on one trip.
Easy to reach. Guatemala City (GUA) has direct flights from many US cities, including Miami, Houston and Los Angeles.
Culture you can include. A Maya blessing, handwoven textiles in your styling, or marimba music at the reception make the day feel rooted in the place.
Space for small weddings. Guatemala suits elopements and weddings of 10 to 100 guests better than large resort weddings.
Antigua or Lake Atitlan: which is right for you?
Choose Antigua Guatemala if you want a full destination wedding in a colonial city, with convent ruins and cobblestone streets. It is about 1 to 1.5 hours from the airport, guests get around on foot or by tuk-tuk, and it comfortably hosts 30 to 150 guests. It is the best fit for larger groups, older guests and couples who want nightlife. Read my Antigua Guatemala wedding guide.
Choose Lake Atitlan if nature comes first: a lake surrounded by three volcanoes and small villages. It is about 3 to 4 hours from the airport, guests move between villages by boat, and it suits 2 to 80 guests. It is the best fit for elopements, micro weddings and nature lovers. Read my Lake Atitlan wedding guide.
Many couples do both: the ceremony and reception in Antigua, then a few days at the lake with close friends, or a separate session on the water.
Eloping in Guatemala
A Guatemala elopement can fit a whole story into one or two days. Picture getting ready in a colonial hotel in Antigua, vows under the Santa Catalina Arch at sunrise, then a drive to the lake for golden-hour portraits from a private boat. Other options include a sunrise at Indian Nose above Lake Atitlan or a ceremony at a coffee estate with volcano views.
Every elopement is planned around you. After our first conversation I suggest locations, timing and coverage, and prepare a personal quote.
Is a Guatemala wedding legal for foreigners?
It can be, but most international couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Guatemala. It is simpler and leaves you free to marry anywhere: a dock, a ruin, a rooftop.
A legal civil marriage in Guatemala for foreigners is performed by a Guatemalan notary. It usually requires valid passports, birth certificates and proof that you are free to marry, apostilled and translated into Spanish. Requirements change, so confirm the current list with a local notary and with your home country before you plan around it.
Best time of year for a wedding in Guatemala
November to April (dry season): sunny days, cool nights and the highest demand. Book 9 to 12 months ahead.
May to October (rainy season): clear mornings, afternoon showers, green landscapes and more availability. Plan morning ceremonies and covered receptions.
Dates to check: Holy Week (March or April) and the December holidays fill hotels in Antigua fast.
Guatemala wedding planning timeline
12 months out: choose Antigua, the lake or both, then book the venue and your photographer.
9 months out: send save-the-dates with travel tips, block hotel rooms, and hire a local planner if you have more than 20 guests.
6 months out: book transport (airport shuttles, private boats), the officiant or Maya spiritual guide, flowers and music.
3 months out: finalize the timeline around sunset time, and do the legal paperwork at home if you choose a symbolic ceremony.
1 month out: confirm every vendor in writing, share a guest guide with the schedule, and plan a rain backup.
What does a Guatemala destination wedding cost?
Guatemala is usually more affordable than Mexico or Costa Rica for comparable quality, especially for venues and catering. The biggest variables are guest count, the venue and transport, which costs more at the lake because of boats. For photography, I prepare a personal quote after our first conversation, based on your guest count, locations and the coverage you want.
Guatemala wedding FAQ
Is Guatemala safe for a destination wedding? Antigua and Lake Atitlan welcome many international visitors each year. Use private transport, avoid night driving between cities and follow local advice.
Do we need a local wedding planner? For more than 20 guests, yes. A planner who knows the vendors, permits and boat schedules saves you stress and money.
Can we include Maya traditions? Yes. A Maya ceremony is led by a spiritual guide (aj q'ij) and usually includes a fire offering. Ask for it to be arranged respectfully with a local guide.
How much does a wedding photographer in Guatemala cost? It depends on the hours, locations and travel involved. At Bluuue Love every couple gets a personal quote after a first conversation, so you only pay for what you need.
